I’ve received similar emails. They’re always replying to the email of the post that went into their email inbox meaning they’re not using the Substack App or website. Two of them have been direct accusations that I intentionally re-subscribed them.
That matters because if one choses to receive Substack posts via email, the unsubscribe button is at the very bottom of the email. One of them threatened to “take action” which I presumed meant contacting Substack.
We can’t see on our end who unsubscribed. The record simply disappears. We can however see the time and date someone did subscribe.
Contacting the poster via email and unsubscribing are far more difficult to do in the Substack app or website.
There are some real bazz wholes, kooks, tr0lz, b0tz (you know them all, the cluster b "community" lol), on substack. That is the downside of a "free speech" platform, but as a substack executive explained in an interview (on Verge?), they tried to put blocking/muting tools in place for Notes. They should have made (non-admin) blocks possible on regular posts as well.
I worked in the claims department at BlueCross BlueShield, and answered many phone calls. I required the caller to speak to me with respect. Occasionally a caller would come at me right away with, "You motherfuckers denied my fucking claim and I pay a lot of money for your fucking dumbass insurance that doesn't even work."
We were supposed to calm the caller and coddle them and apologize and promise to make it right, etc. Not me.
My response was always, "No (ma'am, sir). We are not going to start our conversation like that. I'll help you as best I can, but first you need to get yourself under control."
You know something? It always worked. Always. Their tone and language changed immediately.
Being fussed at like a toddler shocked them back to reality. Some of them even apologized for their behavior.
We MUST, as a society, get back to demanding the basics of decency and respect. Far too many people behave poorly because "they can", and far too many people allow it because they're trained to allow it.
Presently, people need to be shocked back to reality en masse. We must say NO. We must cease enabling the new normal.
Love your comment. I learned a lot. 1. that I must get back to demanding decency and 2. on how to shock back to reality. Plus it made my day (evening).
A strange thing happens when people become "public figures". The audience turns from listener to lecturer. I guess people don't realize that when you have ten thousand, or a million, "followers", you cannot obey them. You cannot listen to every nitpicky suggestion and constructive critique and scolding and advice. No one has time for that shit. By God, if you like the content follow it, and if you don't go away. It's pretty simple. Keep being you Josh.
Oh darn.. I'd just prepared a nice long rant about female oppression and white male supremacy. You sure I can't slip that one through before you start charging for it?
A note to anyone reading this who is considering subscribing in order to rant at me.
Your subscription does not buy you the right to be abusive. You get one shot. If you come in to abuse, I immediately ban you and I do not refund beyond what Substack forces me to. I'll give you zero dollars you spent in the past.
Josh is indeed a badass. 👍🏻
Common decency is a scarce commodity in today’s world. It is so darn sad.
Makes sense to me. 👍🏻
How do you do that?
It's buried in Substack's impenatrable "settings" screen. Very badly designed. You have to read very carefully.
Do not attempt to find this on a phone or tablet. Use your PC/Mac computer.
Thank you for your prompt response, Josh. I appreciate it.
Smart move- Can’t help but wonder if any of the twats will actually start paying to rant on you now…

They can fuck right off. The nerve of getting someone's written content for free and acting that demanding.
Far too many self entitled assholes in all walks of life nowadays.
We need a good pandemic to sort things out..........

I agree with you, Josh. Enough is enough.
