I'd like more of these vignettes - they're kinda like a personal peek into your psyche. Thanks for the tip on cleaning the cast iron. I'll tell you something you might find a little 😱 I rarely wash my cast iron; between uses I keep it in the refrigerator. Once in awhile I am forced to give it a good scraping, but I hadn't thought of boiling water in it to give it an extreme clean. 🙏
Never use dish soap on a cast iron pan or put it in the dishwasher or it will rust. Fortunately, if it does rust, you just scrape the rust off (you can buy them specifically for this purpose), wash it really well with dish soap, then dry it really well. Then using a kitchen or paper towel, rub the pan all over with a thin coating of a neutral oil (I use avocado, but you can use canola or olive oil). Then bake the pan upside-down in a 500 degree oven for an hour. Let it cool for 24 hours. Pan will be like new!

I disagree with "never use dish soap". I believe it is a myth that we all tell ourselves for so long that we don't question it.
It's fine to use some dish soap. Dish soap takes off *surface grease*. It does **not** take off the hardened seasoning.

Flaxseed oil works well too.
