In which I risk the patronage of my UK subscribers by getting right stroppy about how you been doin’ the King’s English. *
1 . One is not "adviced." The verb form is "advised." One is "advised."
2 . One is not "disorientated." "Disorientated" is not a word. It's what's called a back-formation. You formed it backwards from the noun-form elaboration, "orientation."
One is "disoriented."
3 . One really needs to use the subjunctive.
-"If was in that building I woulda run."--WRONG
-"If I were/If I had been in that building, I woulda run." --CORRECT
4 . One is not “taking” a meeting. One attends meetings.
5 . Likewise, one does not “take” a decision. We make decisions, we don’t “take” them. They're not pre-made on the buffet.
* Genuinely outraged pushback comments will look very silly indeed on a humorous post. As you were.
Sort of related… I’ve noticed a trend among millennials and Gen z types who are for all intents and purposes intelligent people say things like “ I had went to ….” It’s driving me starkers. I have tried to correct this grammar glitch in my own adult children with middling success.
Josh, which of the following is correct? 1) I was bored by the speech. Or, 2)I was bored of the speech. I see and hear the latter a lot more often but it just sounds weird to me.
